Farm Safety Week 2026, bringing people and organisations across the UK and Ireland together with one shared aim: to make farms safer places to live and work.

It is a message that matters deeply to us at Xpert Workwear. Farming is at the heart of our community and many of the people who wear Xpert every day work in agriculture. We understand the long hours, the pressure of weather-dependent jobs and the temptation to save a few minutes by taking a shortcut.

But it only takes one decision for an ordinary job to become a life-changing incident.

The figures cannot be ignored

Agriculture continues to have the highest rate of fatal injury of any major industry in Great Britain. The latest Health and Safety Executive figures recorded 22 worker deaths in agriculture, forestry and fishing during 2025/26. The fatal injury rate for the sector was around 22 times the average across all industries.

Those figures are not simply statistics. Every number represents a person who did not return home, along with a family, a farm and a wider community left dealing with the consequences.

Take a moment before the job begins

Farm work can change quickly. Machinery, livestock, moving vehicles, uneven ground, working at height and unpredictable weather all create risks. Familiarity can also create complacency. A task may have been completed the same way hundreds of times, but that does not make it safe.

Before starting, take a moment to ask a few simple questions. What could go wrong? Is the equipment suitable and properly maintained? Does someone know where you are? Are children and bystanders safely away from the working area? Are you wearing the right protective clothing and footwear for the job?

If something does not feel right, stop. Taking a few extra minutes to reassess the job is always better than dealing with the consequences of an avoidable accident.

Safety is something we all share

Farm safety is not only the responsibility of the person doing the job. Everyone has a part to play. Speak up when you see an unnecessary risk. Make sure less experienced workers understand the task. Check in with anyone working alone and never assume that somebody else has dealt with a hazard.

Dependable workwear and correctly rated safety footwear can form an important part of staying protected, but they are only one part of the picture. Good equipment must sit alongside proper planning, training and safe working practices.

This week—and every week—take the risks seriously. Slow down when you need to, look out for the people around you and make sure everyone gets home safely.

No job is worth taking an unnecessary risk.
