Darren McMullan

I began my career working for my father, dividing my time between sales in his fixings business and hands-on work as an air-conditioning engineer. It took me a while to discover my passion, but I soon realised that technical sales, product sourcing, and finding innovative solutions were what motivated me most.

I’ve always been practical, and as a teenager, I spent hours stripping down and rebuilding engines. One of my proudest achievements was building a 2.1-litre Pinto-powered Mk2 Escort to road rally spec – the third Escort I owned, and by far my favourite.

I later joined a mechanical engineering company specialising in pipe fittings, where I was encouraged to expand my technical knowledge and move into product design and development. During my time there, I achieved a Diploma in Quality Management, trained in AutoCAD and Revit, and became heavily involved in bringing new products to market.

After ten years, I was ready for a fresh challenge. Xpert was looking for a Product Development Manager to expand the range, introduce new products, and help shape what was becoming a successful brand. I’ve been incredibly fortunate that the leadership team has trusted me to help grow, refine, and strengthen the Xpert product range, turning ideas into products that customers rely on every day.

Outside of work – engines remain a favourite hobby, although these days they’re a little smaller, maintaining and tuning petrol go-karts with my son. I also enjoy baking with my daughter, heading out on long family walks with my wife and children, and keeping active with running. I regularly attend church, and I value the balance that family, faith, and the outdoors bring to my life.
